Tech Park to Assist Video Game Developers (The Advocate)
The Louisiana Technology Park is expanding its role in serving video game developers by setting aside space, equipment and business expertise specifically with these folks in mind. The tech park, a place where upstart technology firms in Baton Rouge can grow their wings, plans to launch an incubator program for video game developers. The program will likely be in place by the end of the summer, Stephen Loy, executive director of the Louisiana Technology Park, told the Research Park Corp. board of directors Thursday. “The incubator program wouldn’t be another facility, but a room or rooms where small teams would gather to work on games,” said Jesse Hoggard, director of communications for the Louisiana Technology Park at the Bon Carre Business Center on Florida Boulevard. “We’ve found that indy (independent) game developers know their craft backward and forward, but often are less familiar with the business aspect of the industry,” Hoggard continued. “The idea is to offer them an environment where they have all the tools they need to create the end product, with the Tech Park closing the loop on the business side.” The program is an extension of what the technology park sees as its central mission: “An ecosystem that encompasses the full spectrum of the entrepreneurial process,” Hoggard said. Tech Park officials say they don’t yet have estimates for how much it will cost to launch the video game incubator program. In the past several years, Louisiana has become aggressive at attracting digital media firms like video game makers. Firms can earn tax credits for 25 percent of their in-state investment and another 10 percent if those production costs include Louisiana payroll. Read More
